Shawn McMurtrey first at Ogallala Invitational

Shary Skiles/McCook Daily Gazette McCook senior Shawn McMurtrey placed first at the Ogallala cross country meet Thursday.

OGALLALA -- The McCook Bison boys placed third at the Ogallala Invitational cross country meet on Thursday.

The Bison girls placed fifth in the team standings.

The boys were paced by the first-place finish of Shawn McMurtrey. McMurtrey finished with a time of 17 minutes flat.

Cody Martin was 12th for the Bison, with a time of 18:26. Ryan Ankersen (17), Brian Gaston (25), Kelly Maiden (32) and Dallas Korus (35) also competed for the Bison boys.

In the girls division, McCook was paced by a Rebecca Rawlings top 10 finish. Rawlings finished in 17:32, good enough for 10th place. Teammate Emily Gechshwentner came in four seconds later for 11th place.

Connie Ferneau was 15th with a time of 18:01.

Meghan Ecker (24), Renetta Rawlings (27) and Jessica Battreall (33) all ran for the Bison.

McCook will be back in action on Saturday at the Minden Invitational.

Oberlin girls place 4th,

boys 7th at Hill City

HILL CITY -- The Oberlin Red Devils girls and boys cross country teams competed Thursday at the Hill City Invite.

The Red Devil girls finished fourth in the team standings.

The Oberlin girls were paced by Becky Helm, Oberlin's lone medalist. Helm finished 14th in a time of 14:27.

The boys came in seventh in their division.

Andy Leitner was the top runners for the Oberlin boys. He finished the race in 20:23, good enough for 28th place.

"Our girls showed some improvement this week. They were more competitive," said Oberlin coach Dick Ahlberg.

"Whitney ran more up to her potential. Becky was solid again. Kellen and Zeke had pretty good races for the boys," added Ahlberg.

Oberlin hosts the 37th Annual Oberlin Invitational Tuesday at the Oberlin Country Club.
