CURTIS -- Grace Evelyn Merritt, 95, died Sunday (Aug. 29, 2004) at Sunset Haven in Curtis.

She was born Sept. 10, 1908, in Jefferson County, to Marvin Leroy and Effie May Phelps Evans. She moved with her parents to Hayes Center in 1912 where she spent her childhood. She graduated form Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1927.

She taught school in Hayes County.

On Sept. 29, 1934, she married Myrone H. "Red" Merritt of North Platte. He died Nov. 9, 2002. They lived in several states, including Nebraska, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska. They managed a motel in Oregon. After selling it they came to North Platte where they bought Graceland Market. After selling the store, they moved to a farm in Stockville where they farmed for 13 years. They lived in Lincoln for three years and returned to North Platte in 1973. She delivered Meals on Wheels from its beginning and continued in that program until she lost her vision.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of North Platte and Sarah Rebekah Lodge where she received a 50 year jewel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Red; two sisters, Helen Tidyman and Maudie Lashley; and two brothers, Andrew and Perry Evans.

Survivors include two sisters, Laura and husband, Lawrence Walker of McCook and Mamie Domeier of Curtis; one brother, John and wife, Jenica Evans of Citrus Heights, Calif; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were Sept. 1, at the Maywood Cemetery. The Rev. Steven Jergensen officiated.

A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church.
