Bison softball 2-1 at Holdrege

HOLDREGE -- McCook won two out of three games at the Holdredge Tournament, defeating Gering and Cozad.

The Bison, now 2-3 on the season. lost to Lexington in the championship game.

McCook defeated Gering 11-1 behind a one hitter from Taryn Placzek. She struck out three while walking none.

Kori Collins singled to start the game. She would eventually score on a wild pitch.

Jessica Einsphar, running for Kayla Wilson after Wilson's base hit, and Andrea Soden scored on on Natalie Brooks triple.

Brooks scored on a groundout by Collins, rounding out the scoring in the third.

McCook added two more in the fourth. Lindsey Lawson doubled, then scored on singles by Soden and Austin Wilson.

The Bison added another run in the fifth when Kim Serbousek, Michelle McKenna and Lawson all singled.

McCook finished Gering off in the sixth, scoring singles by Collins and Jillian Bryant, along with some Gering errors.

McCook committed only one error.

Stephanie Douglas scattered four hits, a walk and one run, while striking out three, in six innings against Cozad.

Kirstie Hiatt pitched the last inning in a 10-1 victory over Cozad, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Kayla Wilson scored in the second on an Andrea Soden single. Austin Wilson singled and stole second in the third.

She scored when a Kori Collins graound ball was mishandled by Cozad.

Michelle McKenna knocked in Collins.

McCook scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Soden scored on a Natalie Brooks double in the fourth.

Next inning, Kim Serbousek walked and stole second before Kayla Wilson drove her home with a single.

In the sixth, McCook added four more on a Soden single, Kala Smalley walk, Austin Wilson reaching on an error and Collins and McKenna singles.

The 10th run came in the seventh, with Brooks knocking in Soden.

McCook only committed one error in the game.

Lexington defeated McCook in the championship game 2-0.

Taryn Placzek and Stephanie Douglas shared the pitching duties, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out four and walking none.

The Bison defense committed two errors.

Lexington's Leah Luther gave up only two hits to the McCook offense. Lindsey Lawson and Kori Collins each singled.

"The girls played much better than their opener on Thursday," said McCook coach Dale Lortz. "We just need to keep improving," he added.

The Bison host Cozad at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

The Bison host their own tournament Sept. 4 at the Jaycees Sports Complex.

In addition to McCook, other teams competing are Scottsbluff, Cozad, Chase County-Imperial, Holdrege, Gering, Minden and Lexington.
