Eagle girls, Cambridge boys take team honors at So. Valley track meet

Steven Stroup Atwood-Herndon senior Jeff Horinek captured first place in the boys shot put and discus competition Tuesday at the Atwood Invitational track meet. Horinek posted an effort of 55 feet, 5 inches in the shot put and 166-10 in the discus. Horinek has the best shot put mark in Kansas Class 1A. Horinek, who will play football at Colorado State and won the 275-pound weight class at the Kansas Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament.

OXFORD -- The Southern Valley girls track team claimed their own title while the Cambridge boys won the team title Tuesday at the Southern Valley triangular.

The Eagles were led by Darcy Lans, who finished with a pair of first-place medals including the 200 meter dash in 28.9 seconds and the 400 meter dash in 1 minute, 5 seconds.

Teammate Megan Becker also claimed two events with a win in the 300 meter low hurdles in 51.4 seconds and the high jump on a mark of 5 feet even. Trish Harper won the 800 meter run in 2 minutes, 44.3 seconds, while Alyssa Steele added to the team total with a win in the 100 meter dash on a time of 13.6 seconds.

Southern Valley also won the 1,600 meter relay in 4:34.6 and the 3,200 meter relay in 13.51.9.

Cambridge took the 400 meter relay in 54.8 seconds.

Cambridge's Kaci Nickerson claimed two events, winning the pole vault with a leap of 9 feet even and the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 2 inches.

Other first place finishes for the Trojans were Stacy Moore in the 100 meter high hurdles in 18.2 seconds; Lisa Minnick in the shot put with a throw of 38-4; and Andi Langley in the discus with a throw of 106-10.

Arapahoe's Madison Scott finished first in both the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13 minutes, 40.8 seconds and the 1,600 meter run in 6:12.7. Alesa Paulsen also finished the day with a win in the triple jump on a total of 32 feet, 2.75 inches.

In the boys' events, Arapahoe's Mike Cacy claimed three individual titles, winning the long jump on a mark of 18 feet, 10 inches; the 200 meter dash on a time of 24.1 seconds; and the 100 meter dash in 11.8 seconds.

Teammate Blake Maaske won the 800 meter run in 2:12.7, while Arapahoe's 4x400 relay team crossed first in 48.9 seconds.

Cambridge's Marcus Vontz and Tyler Keyser each took home a set of first-place medals. Vontz won the triple jump with a total of 38-3.5 and the high jump on a mark of 5-6.

Keyser won the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.9 seconds and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 42.3 seconds.

Also helping their team to the boys title with first-place finishes were Michael McHale in the 3,200 meter run in 11:13.1; Grant Moore in the 400 meter dash in 54.1 seconds; Chad Howerter in the pole vault with a leap of 11-6; Tristan Foster in the shot put with a throw of 43-3.75; and Kyle Custer in the 1,600 meter run in 4:38.9.

Cambridge also won the 1,600 meter relay in 3:40.8 and the 3,200 meter relay in 9:21.

Southern Valley's Mike Johnson took the gold in the discus with a throw of 124-3.

Dundy County

sweeps titles

at Atwood meet

ATWOOD -- Dundy County swept the boys and girls titles at the Atwood Track Invite on Tuesday.

The boys finished with 140 points, while runner-up Oberlin garnered 99 points.

Atwood placed third with 64, Colby had 48 and Bethune County had 19 points.

For the girls, the Tigers amassed 129 points to claim the title, followed by 118 points by Oberlin.

Colby was third with 71 points, Atwood in fourth with 51 and Bethune at 3.

Dundy County's Nate Stroup helped the Tigers to a team title with wins in the long-distance events including a first-place in the 1,600 meter in 5 minutes, 15.93 seconds.

He also took the 3,200 meter in 11:43.9.

Ben Baird won the 800 meters in 2:10.58, while Dustan Riley took first in the pole vault with 11 feet even.

The Tigers' Ben Shaw finished with two first place finishes including the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches and the triple jump at 40-1.75.

He placed second in the 110 meet high hurdles with a time of 17.1 seconds to Oberlin's Teryn Grafel, who finished in 16.56 seconds.

Grafel earned a second gold medal for the day in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 42.78.

Teammate Joe Mondero also was a double-winner with a first place in the 100 meter dash in 11.85 seconds and the 200 meter in 24.47.

Other first-place finishes for the Red Devils was Brett Bienke in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 2.5 inches; and Lance Fortin in the javelin with a throw of 158-9.

Atwood-Herndon's top placers were double-gold winner Jeff Horinek in the discus with a mark of 166-10 and the shot put at 55-5.

Teammate Mitchell Lowry won the 400 meter in 53.51 seconds.

The relay events were split with Dundy County taking the 4x800 meter in 9 minutes, 40.73 seconds, Oberlin winning the 4x100 in 48.18 and Atwood the 4x400 relay in 3:44.28.

In the girls events, Dundy County was led by two gold medals from Annette Case, who crossed the line first in the 400 meters with a time of 63.22 and the 200 meters in 27.46.

Other first-place finishers for the Tigers were Emily Hudson won the shot put with a throw of 30-3; Shelby Wilson won the discus on a throw of 96-2; Avery Lutz took the high jump on a mark of 5-2; andAlison Glidden won the long jump with a leap of 15-8.5.

Oberlin claimed three individual events and swept the relay events.

The team won the 4x800 relay in 10:54.3, the 4x100 in 53.11 and the 4x400 in 4:23.67.Individual winners included Rena Unger in the triple jump with a first-place total of 32-5.75; Lauren Fortin in the 100 meter dash in 13.34; and Abby Ream in the javelin with a throw of 118-3.

For Atwood-Herndon, Emily Wolters swept the hurdles with a 16.62 win in the 100 meter high hurdles and a 48.28 win in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles.

Teammate Bethany Holste set a meet record in the pole vault with a mark of 9 feet, 6 inches.
