Herndon's 1A state tourney hopes dashed
Beavers fall to Weskan
in sub-state finals
RUSSELL, Kan. -- The Herndon Beavers' hopes of playing in the Kansas Class 1A state tournament ended with an 81-61 loss to Weskan Saturday in the title game at the Russell sub-state.
The Beavers finished their final season with a 23-2 record.
Herndon will consolidate with Atwood to form Rawlins County High School next year.
The Coyotes (20-5) will compete at the 1A state tournament, which starts Wednesday at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the Fort Hays State University campus.
Weskan jumped out to an 11-1 lead as the Beavers missed their first 12 shots from the field.
Herndon battled to within 7 points and trailed at halftime 27-19.
However, Weskan outscored Herndon 31-15 in the third quarter and led 58-34.
The Beavers closed the gap somewhat with a 27-23 fourth period effort.
Lance Basgall led the Beavers with 19 points. Aber Marintzer added 11, Daron Chambers 10, Brett Chambers 7 and Jeff Riener 6.
Laran Steele led the Coyotes with 20 points, Beau Cox scored 19 and Nolan Cox 18.
Herndon's loss leaves the McCook Daily Gazette with two area teams left in postseason.
In the Nebraska Class C-1 state tournament at the Lincoln Pershing gym, Chase County (17-6) plays Kearney Catholic (23-1) at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
In the Class C-2 state tournament at Lincoln North Star, No. 1-ranked and No. 1-seed Cambridge (23-1) plays Sutton (16-6) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
