Hayes Center teams cruise
HAYES CENTER -- The Hayes Center boys basketball team cruised to a 53-32 win over Brady on Thursday, led by 12 points from Nolan Brott.
Teammate Jerry Deaver finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Brett Brown added another 10 points. Nathan Griffiths had a team-high 11 rebounds, while Nolan Brott pulled down 9.
The top scorer for Brady was T.J. Hood with 12 points.
The Cardinals outrebounded Brady 50-24.
"We did a better job of playing under control tonight," said Hayes Center coach Jim Cole. "Dominating the rebounding battle was a big key for us. We need to shoot better and reduce the unforced errors to get better."
Hayes Center (4-7) will travel to Cambridge on Saturday, while Brady (0-12) will host Twin Valley tonight.

Hayes Center girls 63, Brady 22
HAYES CENTER -- The Hayes Center girls basketball team blasted Brady 63-22 Thursday night.
The Cardinals outscored Brady 33-9 in the second half.
Sara Richter spearheaded the Cardinal attack with 21 points and 7 rebounds. She made 9-of-15 field goals and three of her free throws.
Kayla Laird added 11 points and 6 rebounds. Amy Cox, Halea Messersmith and Mary Gohl each scored 6 points.
Amber Gutherless led Brady with 10 points and Channa Dygert added 8.
Hayes Center (6-6) plays at Cambridge on Saturday and Brady (0-12) hosts Twin Valley tonight.

PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. -- Herndon has advanced to the championship game at the Cheyenne Conference Tournament and remains undefeated this season.
After trailing 26-22 at halftime, Herndon held Northern Valley to 3 points in the third quarter and went on to win, 45-35.
Three Herndon players reached double figures in the semi-final win, led by Lance Basgall with 14 points including two 3-pointers. Curtis Brown followed with 11 points, while Jeff Riener had 10 points.
Northern Valley's Avery Thalheim scored 18 points, 13 of those in the first half.
Herndon is now 8-0.

MADRID -- The Culbertson boys basketball team handed Wheatland a 63-57 loss Thursday night at Madrid.
The Bears opened up a 33-24 lead at halftime, but the Spartans cut the lead to 45-40 at the end of three quarters.
"This was a good win for our team," said Culbertson boys coach Mike Tines. "We made our free throws down the stretch and stayed calm."
Joseph Frecks led the Bears with 23 points. Garrett Rippen added 12 and Curtis Olson 8.
Coy Gager led Wheatland with 21 points. Shawn Tjaden added 13 and Luke Johnson 8.
The free throw line determined the outcome. The Bears hit 18-of-30 foul shots (60 percent) and the Spartans made just 9-of-20 (45 percent).
Culbertson committed 19 turnovers and had 10 steals and 11 assists. Wheatland had 14 turnovers, 5 steals and 7 assists.
Culbertson's next game is Jan. 23 at Twin Valley.

MADRID -- The Wheatland girls jumped out to a 31-12 halftime lead and defeated Culbertson 58-30 Thursday night at Madrid.
Megan Ross led the Spartans with 23 points. Nikki Sis and Ashley Day each scored 7 and Amber Cullen 6.
Allison Smith led the Bears with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Ashley Hagan had 5 points and 6 rebounds.
Wheatland outrebounded Culbertson 38-27.
"Wheatland did a good job of controlling the boards and executing in their offensive sets," said Culbertson girls coach Barry Schaeffer.
"We played a better game than we did Tuesday night, but once again our shooting percentage (11-of-39 for 28 percent) keeps us from staying in the game.
"The girls continue to work hard defensively and running the offense. I am proud of their efforts on the court. Hopefully those efforts will pay off in a victory."
