New coach Quiñones excited about MCC women's basketball program

Michelle Quiñones has been on the job as the new women's basketball coach at McCook Community College since August.
She took over for Bob Samuelson, who resigned just before school began.
Quiñones, 29, said she is excited about the opportunity because she will inherit an experienced team.
Six returning sophomores are joined by seven freshmen.
The Indians finished 14-14 last year -- a six-win improvement from the year before.
"Coach Samuelson did a great job with the recruting class and we have good sophomores back," said Quiñones, who will be assisted by Kelly Rippen.
"I watched the team play twice last year. They had a great season last year with a .500 record. I want them to be successful."
The Indians will face a tough schedule in 2003-04, which starts Saturday, Nov. 1 at home against Lincoln School of Commerce. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
MCC hosts Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Quiñones said she is trying to instill a sense of tradition and confidence in her team.
"We have worked on team-building. I want my sophomores to know the program and be a great group of leaders."
Quiñones coached six years of high school basketball, including the last two seasons at McClave, Colo.
She played college basketball at Otero Junior College in LaJunta, Colo., and Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan.
Quiñones is the fiancé of men's basketball coach Ty Orton..
