Morell first at GNAC
KEARNEY -- McCook High School junior Katherine Morell captured first-place medalist honors at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference girls golf tournament Friday afternoon.
The tournament was played at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney.
Morell fired 37s on the front nine and back nine holes for a 74. She edged out Scottsbluff's Britanny Pepler by two strokes.
The McCook golf team, coached by Randy Ryser, finished sixth in the eight-team GNAC tournament with a 423 score.
Lesley Nelson shot 48s on the front and back nine holes for a 96. Tina Nemechek fired a 121, followed by Minda Haas 132 and Kristy Osterman 133.
Norfolk won the GNAC team title with a 339 score, followed by Scottsbluff 350, Kearney 360, Columbus 380 and Lexington 415. North Platte and Hastings rounded out the field at 446 and 452.
The rest of the top 10 individual medal-winners were:
Sarah Wolfe, Norfolk, 79; Lindsay Newton, North Platte, 80; Kate O'Dea, Kearney, 82; Carly Froelich, Norfolk, 84; Julia Engleman, Scottsbluff, 85; Mallory Polodna, Norfolk, 86; Joslin Roach, Kearney, 87; and Maikayla Albin, Hastings, 88.
McCook will compete at the Class B4 District Tournament Monday at the West Wind Golf Course in Ogallala. Also competing are Alliance, Chadron, Cozad, Gering, Ogallala, Scottsbluff and Sidney.
