Carl H. 'Shippee' Welborn

NORTON, Kan. -- Carl Hugh "Shippee" Welborn died Thursday, (Nov. 22, 2001) at the Andbe Home in Norton.

He was born Feb. 24, 1919, at Lebanon to Lawrence M. and Auretta (Daffer) Welborn. He was raised on the family farm east of Lebanon, attended elementary school at District 5 and graduated from Lebanon High School.

Following graduation he planted trees in Halsey Forest for the C.C. Camp. He attended McCook Community College for two years and Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Jan. 14, 1965, he married Josephine E. (Hanni) Daffer at Beaver City. They made their home in Beaver City until 1971 when they moved to the family farm near Lebanon. They moved to Norton in 1997 to be closer to family.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; Highway 89 Board; Lebanon Cemetery Board; and a 50-year member of the Lebanon American Legion Post No. 313. He also served on the board of directors for the High Plains Museum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brother, Russell and James Gilbert Welborn; and three sisters, Arlene Elmer, Lucille Gragg and Joyce Welborn.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine of Norton; children Jay and wife, Julia Daffer, Pamela and husband, Lynn Menagh of Norton, and Barry and wife, Karen Daffer of Holdrege; one brother, Rex and wife, Marilyn Welborn; four sisters, Virena Creasman of Sidney, Leah Warner of Tampa, Fla., Winnie Kotschwar of Kettering, Ohio, and Auretta Parker of Littleton, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m., at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Kersenbrock officiating. Interment will be at the Lebanon Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday, 1:30-8:30 p.m., at the Enfield Funeral Home at Norton.

Memorials may be made to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church; the Lebanon Cemetery Fund; or the Lebanon American Legion Post No. 313.
