Support arena

Monday, January 21, 2002

Dear Editor,

I would like to express my support for the Kiplinger Equestrian Arena at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds. I can see many benefits to the area.

On a selfish level it would be a wonderful boost to the 4-H program. Being able to participate in horse- and livestock shows in a protected environment would be a great advantage to our youth. Spectators would be able to watch their children, grandchildren, and friends in a more comfortable manor.

For the community, there are many potential uses for such a facility. Many of them have been brought up by other supportive people. Rodeos, cattle shows and expositions, recreational vehicle shows, etc. My husband and I belong to the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association. They hold an annual roping competition in conjunction with their summer continuing education meetings. A facility such as this indoor arena would be a drawing card for possible future conventions. The possibilities are endless.

As to the concerns of people in the neighborhood as to noise, crowds, animal wastes, etc.; our children exhibit livestock at the county fair. Many of the livestock projects must be on the fairgrounds several days. The fair board has available several manure spreaders.

The youth are responsible for removing any waste and placing it in these. I would invite anyone to visit the fair and see the fine job they do. I'm sure a similar arrangement would be made for any horse or livestock shows that would be held in the proposed arena. As for flies or a stench, I have never noticed a problem at the fair in the many years that I have attended.

There could potentially be more traffic. That would be a natural consequence of more use. But I believe that West Q Street is capable of handling an increase in traffic. It has easy access to Highway 83 and is wide enough for trailers. This has been demonstrated by past use.

I do not foresee a great increase in noise, either. Most livestock and horse exhibitors try to keep relatively quiet around their animals so as not to excite or spook them. I would think the building itself would actually stifle some of the noise.

Of course, with increased traffic and usage there's bound to be more days when there is some noise. But the races are far more noisy than any livestock or horse show.

I, for one, am excited at the prospect of an indoor arena on our fairgrounds. There are so many potential benefits to the entire community. I would personally like to thank Mr. Kiplinger for his generous offer. I hope the city council and the citizens of McCook will have the foresight to see the possible benefits and have the grace to accept his offer.

Sincerely,

Gale Slattery
