Served well

Tuesday, September 3, 2002

Dear Editor,

Chris Overman was elected by the people to serve on the City Council. He did, in fact, receive more votes than another council member in the last election. This would indicate that at least at the time he held the confidence of the people.

He has been a councilman who was faithful to his elected position, through regular attendance at meetings and special forums. Even if he voted opposite of individual citizen's opinions on certain issues, he voted for what he believed to be in the best interests of the city. He remains the same man of integrity we elected nearly two years ago.

Mr. Overman has had the opportunity to study the water issue and the current budget. Having him leave the council prior to settling those two issues would leave the city in a position of having one less informed vote, for the citizens of McCook (Again acknowledging we may not support the way he votes).

Leaving a vacancy on the council for a period of time, or having an inexperienced person join the council and then be asked to make informed decisions on the current city budget and the water issue would seem ill-advised.

The politics of when Mr. Overman resigns is not as important as having the most informed person seated on the City Council when the two critical issues of budget and water are decided. Therefore I, for one, would like to see Mr. Overman remain until those two major issues are settled.

We as citizens trusted him when we overwhelmingly elected him. We should trust him now. Whatever his decision, he has served McCook well.
