Meaningful message

Wednesday, November 20, 2002

Dear Editor,

The following article, called "The Soldier," is very old. I was looking for it before Veteran's Day, but did not come across it until later. Here it is. I hope you will use it, enjoy it and find it meaningful.

The Soldier

It is the Soldier, not the President, who gave us democracy.

It is the Soldier, not the Congress, who defends our nation.

It is the Soldier, not the Reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the Poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the Campus Organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, that allows the protester to burn the flag.

It is the Soldier, always the Soldier.

Respectfully submitted,

Bernelda Nelson,

Bartley
