As a kid growing up in McCook, as far as I was concerned, this was the most mysterious place in town. There it sat nearby the swimming pool, squat, dark, rockbound and enigmatic. As near as I can remember, it was never open. Never. Rumors constantly circulated among the kids as to what was in the building. The most persistent held that it contained guns. Adults probably told us that it belonged to the D.A.R. This was casting pearls before swine in every sense of the expression. We wouldn't have known a D.A.R. from a bale of hay.

My cousin broke into it one day to see just what was in there. Contrary to popular peer speculation at the time, he was not sent to reform school for doing so. Another mystery and food for juvenile folklore.
