Crimestoppers call leads to arrest

Wednesday, January 22, 2003

A Crimestoppers Crime of the Week announcement led to the felony arrest of an individual in connection with the Sept. 24, 2002 theft of a pickup tailgate.

On Sept. 24, the McCook Police Department received a theft report from Ed Gunther of McCook. He told the police that an unknown person had removed a tailgate from his 1991 Ford F-150 pickup while it was parked in the driveway of his home. This incident was reported in the Crimestoppers Crime of the Week announcement.

On Nov. 9, an individual who was aware of the report and had information about the whereabouts of the tailgate, as well as the identity of the thief, contacted the police. The authorities used the information to recover the property and then issued a warrant for the arrest of the perpetrator. On Dec. 23, an off duty Red Willow County Sheriff's deputy observed an individual matching the description of the wanted man walking through a residential area in North McCook and contacted McCook Police.

Officers responded and identified the 19-year-old McCook man, who was immediately arrested and transported to McCook City Jail.
