Fun Run set for Heritage Days

From a small beginning, the McCook United Way 5k and Fun Run and Walk continues to grow, with hopes this year of surpassing the 100 participant level.

"We had 85 runners and walkers last year, and are starting early this year in our quest to top the 100 mark," said Doug Skiles, a dedicated runner who is heading up arrangements for the 5k.

This is the third year for the event, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 27, during the Heritage Days celebration. Runners and walkers will register at 7:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church at Norris and E streets.

The race begins on the northeast edge of Norris Park (at East First and H streets). Both the 5k and the Fun Run and Walk will begin at 8 a.m., but the participants will follow different courses. The 5k'ers will head east on H, then turn down Country Club Drive and proceed to Kelley Park before heading back to Norris Avenue for the finish of the race. "We pass by some of the prettiest parts of McCook," Skiles said. The race is self-supporting, with an entry fee of $20 for the 5k and $10 for the Fun Run and Walk. The funds help cover the cost of medals for the first five places in various age categories.

The theme for this year's run is "Make Your Caring Count." As explained by Skiles, the purpose of the 5k and Fun Run is showcasing the agencies served by the McCook United Way fund drive. There are 19 different agencies which share the more than $85,000 contributed annually to the local drive.

Sign-up sheets are available at a number of McCook businesses, including McPherron, Skiles, Joel & Loop, AmFirst Bank, First Central Bank, McCook National Bank, Wells Fargo, Body Connection, The Sports Shoppe, the McCook Daily Gazette, Coyote Country 105.3 and The Prairie 93.9 and the KICX, KBRL and K-Rock radio stations.

"Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome," Skiles said. "Come out and help us build awareness of the United Way fund drive. Participants will get a t-shirt to mark the occasion, and they will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping a worthy cause."
