MNB's Jason Eder pitches four-hitter
The McCook National Bank Seniors overpowered the Overton Seniors 13-0 Thursday night at the Jaycees Sports Complex.
MNB improved its record on the year to 6-2. Jason Eder picked up the duties at the mound for MNB.
He picked up the win on his way to striking out eight and walking only one Overton batter in his five innings of work.
Eder and the MNB defense held Overton to four hits on one error. Eder got the nod to pitch from coach Tye Hallowell even though he has been battling an illness for the past couple of days.
Eder said he wasn't going to let it distract him, "I had to relax and make sure I threw strikes. I knew my teammates would handle the rest."
However, Overton didn't have the same luck with its defense. MNB ripped Overton pitcher Joe McCarter for 13 runs on nine hits.
It was not a good night for the Overton infield, registering seven errors for the evening.
Eder started off the game with three strike outs in the first inning, on his way to recording six in the first three frames of play.
The MNB offense struck early and often. They scored two runs in the first inning off hits by Derick Lorentz and Muehlenkamp.
The Seniors came back to score two in the second and then tore the game open with an eight run eighth inning.
"In a game like this all you can do is focus on putting the ball in play. We must continue to play our game and not allow the scoreboard to bring down our level of play." Hallowell said.
While in the third inning MNB had Lorentz on first and Muehlenkamp on second. McCarter threw to first on an attempt to pick-off Lorentz.
McCarter caught Lorentz off of the bag and had him in a run-down.
Lorentz out ran first baseman Charlie Rudeon and then pivoted back toward first when the ball was thrown to second baseman Cole Robinson.
Lorentz ran safely back to first as Overton's defense melted down and had nobody covering.
During the play, Muehlencamp, who was on second base, snuck around third and on to home plate to score MNB's ninth run of the game.
MNB offensive production would end in third inning and the game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule. Hallowell said he was pleased with Eder's effort on the mound.
"Eder came out tonight and improved from where he was in his first start."
MNB travels to Lexington tonight. The McCook Juniors will start the action at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Seniors at 8 p.m.
Hallowell said that the team will be looking for some payback after Lexington knocked them out of district play last year.
He said fan support would be appreciated in this important district game.
Saturday, MNB travels to Nebraska City to play a doubleheader with the defending Class B legion champs.
The first pitch is slated to be thrown at 3 p.m. and the second game will follow.
MNB will travel to Central City on Sunday. The first game will start at 1 pm. MNB hosts a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday against Colby.
