Wannabe Sitcom Mom

Sitcom moms have always been my idols. Who hasn't wished they could respond to one of life's irritations with just the right quip at just the right moment? I have often longed to channel the way they handle every obstacle with a quick wit that makes them look so smart and enduring, no matter how ridiculous the scenario. Perhaps that's why my own life seems to have taken on the characteristics of a sitcom, complete with "my three sons" and a "Malcolm in the middle." My kids provide an endless laugh track, my husband and in-laws the witty dialogue, and the grandparents have the cameras rolling to capture almost every moment. I'm guessing there are many other sitcom moms in this area. After all, a sitcom sense of humor is a necessary part of parenthood, or at least a useful coping technique. …mistakenly taken a drink from your child's sippy cup instead of your diet coke while dining at McDonald's on a particularly sleep-deprived day?

…yelled every child's name--and even the cat's--before getting the correct name of the child in trouble?

…hurriedly ushered your children out of church mid-sermon because of their loud, disruptive giggling at their own toilet humor?

…stepped on a lego and let out a swear word just in time to look up and see that your husband is holding the phone in front of you and mouthing the words, "It's your mom?"

If you answered yes to any of the preceding questions, congratulations (and condolences)! You can join the rest of us in the human race whose lives are less June Cleaver and more Roseanne. If not one of those examples applied to you, then gosh! I guess it's just my own life's wackiness. Boy, am I embarrassed!
