West Virginia Primary
We are down to just one race; the Democratic Primary between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Or are we? There have been rumors swirling that if Ted Cruz wins Nebraska today he would restart his presidential campaign. I personally doubt it either way but it would make for a great story.
Before discussing the Democratic West Virginia primary I have a little house keeping to do.
Hillary Clinton won Guam over the weekend gaining four delegates to Sanders 3. This puts their totals up to today:
Hillary Clinton - 1,704 delegates
Bernie Sanders - 1,421 delegates
There are 29 delegates up for grabs today in the state. Bernie Sanders has the lead going into today with an average of 47-43%. That is also his lead in the last polling. The polling in West Virginia has swung greatly in either direction since February. At that time, Sanders had a 57-29% lead over Hillary. A month later, Hillary had a 44-31% lead on Sanders. Sanders has lead the last two polls.
www.fivethirtyeight.com gives Sanders a 63% of winning the state.
UPDATE 8:30 PM:
Well, so much for Ted Cruz possibly coming back into the race as Trump is projected to win Nebraska as well as West Virginia. Sanders is currently leading Hillary by 10% but no call as of yet.
UPDATE 8:45 PM:
Bernie Sanders has now been projected to win the state of West Virginia.
GENERAL UPDATE:
As polling was brought up in another post in the next few days I am planning to break down the polling compared to the actual results for the Republican Party. I will do the same for the Democratic Party once that primary has been decided.
FINAL UPDATE:
Bernie once again beat all expectations and beat Hillary going away 51-36% and picked up the delegates 18-11. That still isn't at the percentage that he would need to over take Clinton but it helps him keep pace.
TOTAL DELEGATES:
NEEDED TO WIN NOMINATION:
Hillary Clinton - 1,715
Clinton needs to win 35% of the remaining delegates (311 of 897) to win the nomination before the convention.
Bernie Sanders - 1,439
Sanders needs to win 65% of the remaining delegates (587 of 897) to win the nomination before the convention.
Though Clinton only won 36% of the vote last night which is what Sanders needed he only garnered 51% of the vote due to other candidates being on the ballot that garnered the remaining 13% of the vote.
POLL BLOG PREVIEW:
I am currently working on the polling through the Republican primaries and I have found that a candidate was severely under polled. It was not Trump however.
