McCOOK, Neb. — Red Willow County Sheriff Kevin Darling shared an important update Thursday regarding the investigation into the recent shooting of a gestating mare, an incident that has shocked the local community.

“We appreciate the public’s help in providing bits of information,” Sheriff Darling said. “Keep it up; that one piece of information is out there that will give us a clear picture of who did this.”

Sheriff Darling clarified some details amidst circulating rumors. “This was not an errant hunter that mistakenly shot the horse. This was not a pheasant hunter with a shotgun,” he emphasized.

The Sheriff’s Office is actively collaborating with Nebraska Game and Parks to bring additional resources and officers to the investigation. “We are working together to pursue every lead and ensure a thorough inquiry,” Darling stated.

The initial reward for information leading to prosecution was set at $5,000, offered by the horse’s family. Since then, an additional $1,000 has been contributed by other family members, and an anonymous donor has added $1,500, bringing the total reward to $7,500.

“The family is committed to seeking justice, and their efforts have been bolstered by the generosity of the community,” Darling noted.

The incident occurred between Friday evening and Saturday morning, south of Road 715 and east of 394. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office at 308-345-1850, McCook Police Department at 308-345-3450, or McCook CrimeStoppers at 308-345- 5440.

“This was a senseless act that deeply affected a family and our community,” Darling said. “We are determined to find the person or persons responsible and bring them to justice.” The Sheriff concluded by reiterating the importance of community cooperation: “Your tips matter. Please come forward if you know anything, no matter how small it may seem.” The investigation remains ongoing.
