McCOOK, Neb. - Dennis Ray McFarland, 68, passed away peacefully Nov. 10, 2024 from liver cancer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.. He was born Feb. 21, 1956 to Lewis and LaVeda (Jones) McFarland In Cambridge, Neb. He graduated from Cambridge High School where he excelled in football and track in shot put and discus.
He married Linda Jolly on June 29, 1975 in Cambridge Neb. Through this union two children, Megan (Omaha) and Les (Lincoln) were born.
Dennis spent most of his life in southwest Nebraska. He worked in pest control for 32 years. He and Linda owned D&L Pest control for most of that time. He took pride in his work and customers were a top priority, with many friends being made along the way. Among his other endeavors, he ran McCook Speedway for four years. His passion for racing led him to be known for having one of the best tracks in the area. Track conditions had to be “just right” and always ran a tight ship when it came to safety and following the rules. He had a great team, helping him accomplish this.
When he was in high school, he started playing Santa Clause and continued for many years. He loved talking to the little kids, hearing their Christmas lists and seeing their reactions.
He retired in 2018. In retirement he had a busy schedule of coffee in the morning and Judge Judy in the afternoon. He also loved his football and spent his weekend watching games.
Dennis never knew a stranger. He could meet someone and in 15 minutes would know their life story. Even if it was many years down the road, he would still remember them and their story.
