Embracing healthy aging in Southwest Nebraska

Friday, September 27, 2024

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services tells us that September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to celebrate the value of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as we grow older. Here in southwest Nebraska, our clean air, open spaces, and close-knit communities provide the perfect environment for embracing the later stages of life with vitality and well-being.

Unlike urban areas that face pollution or overcrowding, we enjoy open spaces that make it easy to take daily walks, breathe fresh air, and engage in outdoor activities like hiking or yoga. Staying active is one of the best ways to maintain physical and mental health as we age.

Whether it’s exercise, social engagement, or a balanced diet, small changes can make a big difference in both quality and length of life. Tony Green, director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, reminds us, “It is never too late to make positive changes in your life or seek services to fit your changing care needs.” The department recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, and our region provides ample opportunities to meet that goal.

An active lifestyle doesn’t have to involve strenuous exercise. Something as simple as a daily walk can improve balance, mobility, and cognitive function. Whether it’s a stroll through a local park or joining a community yoga class, southwest Nebraskans have access to plenty of ways to keep moving.

Just as important as physical activity is staying mentally engaged. Reading, puzzles, creative hobbies, and socializing with friends can all contribute to a healthy mind. Fortunately, our community is rich in social connections, with groups and events offering a wide range of activities to keep seniors engaged.

Loneliness can have a detrimental effect on health as we age, making social interaction crucial. Spending time with family and friends or joining local community groups can provide emotional support and prevent isolation. In southwest Nebraska, where community ties are strong, it’s easier to stay connected with others. For those who may face transportation challenges, local services can help ensure no one is left out.

Another cornerstone of healthy aging is a nutritious diet. As we age, our dietary needs change, and it’s essential to consume age-appropriate portions of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Southwest Nebraska’s agricultural bounty means we have easy access to fresh, wholesome foods that support a balanced diet.

Simple adjustments, like reducing processed foods or preparing favorite dishes with healthier ingredients, can have long-term health benefits. The combination of locally grown produce and age-conscious portion control is a recipe for better health.

Aging is not a solitary journey, and support is available to ensure that Nebraskans can age gracefully. The Aging and Disability Resource Center provides guidance on various services, from in-home care to legal assistance and volunteer opportunities. Programs like the Aged and Disabled Waiver allow eligible individuals to stay in their homes while receiving the care they need.

Routine health checkups are another critical component of aging well. Regular visits to healthcare providers can catch potential health concerns early and help manage any chronic conditions. Keeping both physical and mental health in focus is key to enjoying a fulfilling, longer life.

As we observe Healthy Aging Month, it’s a good time to appreciate how lucky we are to live in southwest Nebraska. Our region’s natural beauty and supportive communities provide the perfect backdrop for aging with grace and vitality. Whether you’re staying active in our parks, enjoying fresh, locally grown foods, or engaging with friends and neighbors, healthy aging is not only achievable but enjoyable here.
