Step back in time at 16th annual Bum Malleck/Griff Malleck Memorial Threshing & Malleck Memorial Quilt Show

INDIANOLA, Neb. — Mark your calendars for a journey into the past on Sunday, Aug. 11, as the 16th Annual Bum Malleck/Griff Malleck Memorial Threshing & Wanda Malleck Memorial Quilt Show takes place just 4 miles south of Indianola. This unique event, held in conjunction with the annual Indianola Old Settlers Celebration, offers a captivating glimpse into old-time harvesting and farming methods.

The Malleck show has grown into much more than just a threshing event. This year, attendees can look forward to various demonstrations, including a sawmill and shingle-making, alongside other early 1900s farm machines. “We think our show is somewhat unique in that we don’t just display the equipment. We have live demonstrations of most of the machines, and they actually do work,” said Bob Marts, one of the show’s organizers.

Visitors will marvel at a large display of working antique tractors, approximately 50 stationary engines, and at least one steam-powered tractor belted to various pieces of machinery. The event is expected to draw hundreds of spectators eager to see the extensive collection of 1920s-era Rumley oil pull tractors, including the largest Rumley tractor ever made with wheels almost 7 feet high.

This year’s demonstrations promise to be just as impressive, featuring an original wooden threshing machine that has been stored inside for decades and a 100-year-old grist mill producing fresh corn meal. Returning favorites include the straw broom-making and wooden bucket-making demonstrations.

New to this year’s lineup is a reconstructed 1940s blacksmith shop, complete with a trip hammer and a modern horse-drawn big round bale mover demonstration.

In addition to the machinery, attendees can enjoy self-guided tours of a refurbished 100-year-old horse and mule barn and a one-room schoolhouse with original desks. The Wanda Malleck Memorial Quilt Show will also be a highlight, showcasing beautifully crafted quilts.

The event is open to the public with no admission charge. Show preparations begin on Saturday, with the main event kicking off at Noon on Sunday, Aug. 11. Food and shaded areas will be available on-site, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all.
