Korean War veterans; a legacy of bravery and sacrifice

On this National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, we pause to honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Korean War, a conflict that profoundly shaped our world.
As we commemorate the end of hostilities on July 27, 1953, we remember the immense contributions of the brave men and women who fought to defend freedom on the Korean Peninsula.
The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union and China, invaded South Korea. In response, the United Nations, led predominantly by United States forces, rallied to support South Korea.
Over the course of three intense years, the war claimed the lives of over 36,000 Americans, with 103,284 wounded and an additional 8,177 missing in action. Among these were 246 battle deaths, 46 missing in action, and 15 prisoners of war from Nebraska.
Nebraska is proud to be home to thousands of Korean War veterans. These individuals embody the spirit of resilience and bravery that defined their service and continue to inspire us today. They answered the call of duty, joining 5,720,000 Americans in a fight that not only halted the spread of communism but also paved the way for the Republic of Korea’s revitalization in infrastructure, economy, and education.
The Korean War stands as a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the strength and determination of those who fought. The war ended with an armistice led by President Eisenhower, creating the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and allowing for the exchange of prisoners. Though no peace treaty was signed, the conflict’s resolution marked a significant step in the global fight for freedom and the establishment of a vibrant, democratic South Korea.
On this day, as proclaimed by Gov. Jim Pillen, we recognize July 27, 2024, as Korean War Veterans Armistice Day in Nebraska. We urge all citizens to honor and remember the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
Their legacy is one of unyielding courage and a testament to the profound impact of their service in the pursuit of global peace and security.
We join together in gratitude and respect for our Korean War veterans, whose bravery and sacrifice have left an indelible mark on our nation and the world.
