MNB Seniors lasso Bulls twice leading into Fair week

Tuesday, July 23, 2024
The McCook National Bank Seniors swept over Hi-Line, 15-0 and 11-3, Monday night despite this near entanglement between pitcher Ollie Corbett and infielder Trent Raile on an infield grounder. MNB finishes its regular season at 21-18 and will start B-6 area playoffs in Broken Bow against Holdrege Friday morning (11 a.m.). More details are in today's McCook Gazette.

McCOOK, Neb. — A rocket two-run double from Quentin Terry suddenly became even more ominous when the scoreboard showed....

0-0?!?!?!

Ominous because there weren’t enough lights on the board to cover all of those first-inning runs Monday night.

McCook National Bank Seniors actually led 10-0 on Terry’s two RBIs and even more disturbing:

The out column stillshowed a big round zero.

MNB eventually plated 14 first-inning runs which literally did nearly end game one of this doubleheader.

The hosts only needed to add one more score, then Espn Hall finished a combined no-hitter.

A not-often-used 15-0 “mercy rule” was enforced after just 2 1/2 frames.

Though Hi-Line actually led game two 3-1, MNB unleashed another 10 runs to win 11-3 in less than five.

So Monday was essentially one seven-inning contest. The final tallies?

MNB 26, Hi-Line 3.

The Seniors smashed 16 hits — but they also earned 18 free passes on eight walks and Hi-Line hurlers hitting 10 MNB batters with pitches.

Kale Sattler was clunked twice in game one for a “welcome to Senior Legion” baseball greeting.

Sattler was a top pitcher and run producer for McCook First Central Bank’s 23-10 Juniors this summer.

Trent Raile took two baseballs off his body parts in game two.

Meanwhile, eight MNB pitchers teamed to allow just two hits all evening.

Tristan Campbell, Oliver Corbett, Trey Tiller, Miles Pollmann and Brody Graham each threw one inning of the nightcap where they teamed for 10 strikeouts.

Season-long “K” king Pollmann fanned three during his work on the hill.

Tiller, Campbell and Graham each fanned two. It was a fine tune-up for the B-6 area tournament starting Friday at Broken Bow.

MNB completed a 21-18 regular season which included four victories over B-6 area foes.

Hi-Line Bulls slipped to 3-10 this season. They’ve dropped three straight since an 8-5 win over Cambridge-Arapahoe on July 8.

Here are the MNB leaders through that 15-0 game on win Monday:

Terry doubled, tripled, scored two runs and totaled three RBIs;

Leadoff Batter Tristan Campbell scored three runs while Bryson Gullion, Simon Garcia and Gabe Roberts each rounded the bases twice;

Garcia, Sattler and Ty Junker drove home two runs apiece;

Gabe Roberts started and earned the win. He struck out two during one perfect inning.

Game two turned on Gullion’s infield grounder which the Bulls threw wildly past first base.

Hall’s RBI-single gave MNB the lead for good at 4-3. He earlier made a tumbling catch in left field to rob Hi-Line of one key hit.

Pollmann had already doubled and Noah Mashek singled to ignite a seven-run third inning.

Raile was soon hit by a pitch, forcing home Pollmann to make it 5-3.

Hall soon motored home on a wild pitch before Trey Tiller’s fly ball was dropped. Mashek finished his journey for a 7-3 MNB lead.

Gullion’s RBI-double soon plated both Tiller and Raile.

When Pollmann hit another ground ball, Raile scored again and MNB was in control at 10-3.

The Seniors finished a solid performance for their first games since falling against North Platte nearly two weeks ago on July 9.
