MNB begins playoffs vs. Holdrege, Minden earns B-6 top seed

BROKEN BOW, Neb. — The McCook National Bank Seniors must topple higher seeds to win a Class B state tournament spot starting with No. 4 Holdrege in Friday's B-6 tournament opener.

MNB's 19-18 overall record has earned a No. 5 seed among seven teams competing in Bow. Holdrege (14-7 at last report) claimed the No. 4 spot behind No. 1 Minden (18-3), No. 2 Broken Bow (14-6) and No. 3 Central City (12-6).

No. 4 Holdrege and No. 5 MNB will begin the B-6 tourney at 11 a.m. on Friday. No. 3 Central City then meets No. 6 Gothenburg (5-12) with a 1:30 p.m. scheduled first pitch.

No. 2 host Bow and No. 7 Doniphan-Trumbull (0-12) play the Friday first-round finale set for 4 p.m.

The MNB-Holdrege winner would play No. 1 Minden at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

MNB split two games against Holdrege during the regular season. A May 29 contest was actually suspended until June 26 and moved to Holdrege because of rain.

Holdrege Inspire Rehabilitation won that game, 6-5, but MNB rebounded to win the regularly-scheduled contest 7-5.

Another element entering the B-6 is Holdrege has already qualified for Class B state since it hosts that tournament next week in Holdrege.

MNB must win the B-6 tourney championship. The complete area schedule following Friday's openers:

Saturday games at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Sunday games at noon and 3 p.m.

Monday games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tuesday B-6 title games at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. (if necessary).

MNB can improve on its regular-season record since the Seniors are hosting one more doubleheader today at McCook's Jaycees Complex.

Hi-Line (Eustis-Farnam-Elwood) will provide the challenge in contests starting at 5:30 and 8 p.m.
