McCOOK Neb. - Breakaway McCook, a 501(c) organization, is on a mission to establish a vibrant community space that remains active throughout all seasons of the year. The organization values intentionality, building connections, whole-person learning, and a solid foundation to ensure a dynamic environment for children and youth.

From the outset, Breakaway McCook has been driven by resilient community leaders whose unwavering vision is to bring a children’s museum to Southwest Nebraska. Forming a dedicated board, they embarked on a journey, attending national conferences and studying various children’s museums for inspiration. COVID-19 halted planning, but they remained steadfast in their mission, demonstrating their commitment to the community.

Undeterred, the board regrouped with renewed determination, gearing up to pitch their vision to a potential donor. Their perseverance paid off as they secured a significant boost through a generous $400,000 donation from Jerome and Linda Knoll. The Knolls were motivated by their deep-rooted commitment to investing in the youth of McCook and Southwest Nebraska.

The initial concept evolved through extensive research and contemplation beyond traditional education-centric offerings to encompass diverse amenities catering to youth activities during inclement weather. The expanded vision now includes a large indoor play structure, a café, and other engaging elements, transforming Breakaway McCook into a multifaceted ‘Activity and Education Space’ that caters to diverse interests and backgrounds.

The Breakaway board thought they had found a location for the endeavor and hoped construction could begin for an end-of-year opening in 2025. Unfortunately, the proposed location is no longer available, bringing them to another halt. Building from the ground up is expensive; finding a location to fit their needs and remodeling it would be a more price-conscious choice.

Despite the significant obstacles, the board is diligently moving ahead, filled with anticipation for the future. They know that once a building is purchased, they can start taking action to bring the Breakaway vision to life and are eager to do so.

With a steadfast commitment to fostering community engagement and holistic development, Breakaway McCook is poised to become a hub for learning, connection, and recreation in Southwest Nebraska. The board’s unwavering dedication ensures that it will offer a safe, welcoming, and affordable environment for individuals of all backgrounds and ages.

Update: The board has located a property and are in the process of closing on it, to keep up to date on the progress follow them on Facebook at Breakaway McCook.
