BENKELMAN, Neb. — A truck passenger was killed and the driver was injured in a truck-train collision Tuesday.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., Dundy County Communications received a report of a serious collision involving a train and a semi-truck near Highway 34, mile marker 2. The incident resulted in the ejection of both occupants of the semi and their subsequent transport to the Wray, Colo., hospital for treatment.

The male driver, a resident of Wyoming, was later flown to another hospital for further care. Unfortunately, the male passenger, also from Wyoming, was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the semi was attempting to cross the tracks ahead of the arriving BNSF train. The Dundy County Sheriff's Office expressed their condolences, stating, "Our prayers go out to the family of those involved."

The Dundy County Sheriff's Office received substantial assistance from the Haigler Fire Department, Benkelman Fire Department, Red Willow Western Fire Department, Benkelman EMS, Wray EMS, the Dundy County Roads Superintendent, and the Dundy County Clerk. Sheriff Ryan King extended his gratitude to all who assisted with the incident.

This investigation is ongoing, and no further updates will be released at this time.
