McCOOK, Neb. – Excitement is bubbling in McCook as the city prepares to open its brand-new Aquatic Park. The grand opening ceremony, complete with a ribbon-cutting, is set for Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., followed by the park’s official opening at 1 p.m. Kyle Potthoff, the City of McCook Public Works Director, shared details about the much-anticipated event and the state-of-the-art facilities.

“We’re thrilled to open the new McCook Aquatic Park,” said Potthoff. “This project is monumental for McCook and the entire region. The community support has been incredible, and we’re expecting a large turnout.”

The park features a variety of attractions designed to cater to all age groups. Highlights include a lazy river with adjustable speeds, two diving boards in a competition pool, a zero-depth entry area for young children, and multiple spray features.

The park also boasts a family slide, allowing parents and children to enjoy the ride together, along with larger slides, including a plume slide and a speed slide.

Another unique feature is the lilypad walk, where participants try to balance on floating pads tethered to the pool floor while holding onto an overhead rope net. “It’s not as easy as it looks,” Potthoff remarked, noting the fun challenge it presents.

Lifeguards and pool operators are fully staffed to ensure safety and smooth operations. “We have five pool operators and enough lifeguards to cover our opening hours from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily,” Potthoff assured.

The park will adjust hours based on the availability of lifeguards, especially as school sports begin.

In a generous gesture, the Community Foundation Fund has made admission free for all visitors this year. “Whether you’re a McCook resident or not, everyone is welcome to enjoy the pool free of charge,” Potthoff confirmed.

The construction team, led by Corruthers Construction, and the engineering firms Lamp Rynearson and W Design, were praised for their exceptional work and dedication to meeting the summer opening deadline. Despite a few minor issues identified during the state inspection Monday, the team is confident everything will be resolved promptly.

Future plans include the completion of the parking lot and landscaping around the park.

Potthoff expressed immense gratitude to the citizens of McCook for passing the bond issue that made the project possible and thanked the City Council, city staff, and the Public Works Department for their hard work.

With anticipation building, Potthoff expects a large crowd at Wednesday’s opening. He advised visitors to use plywood paths from the shelter house to the pool due to ongoing parking lot improvements.

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone and see the community enjoying this fantastic facility,” Potthoff said, inviting everyone to join the celebration and make the most of the new aquatic amenities.
