McCOOK, Neb. — A two-vehicle collision on South Highway 83 near McCook resulted in injuries and necessitated a coordinated emergency response from multiple agencies. The incident occurred at approximately 10:07 a.m. Monday and involved a Weather Craft heavy lift box truck and a FedEx van.

The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office reported that the McCook Ambulance, Red Willow Rural Western Fire Department, and RWCS were dispatched to the scene. Emergency responders, including volunteers worked to stabilize and extricate the driver of the FedEx van, who was trapped after the van rear-ended the truck.

The collision, which happened in the slow-moving lane south of Road 712 and Highway 83, caused significant damage to the FedEx van, deploying its airbags and trapping the driver.

The dashboard and windshield were pushed into the driver, requiring specialized equipment to cut out the steering wheel and pry off the dashboard.

The driver of the FedEx van was successfully extricated and transported to McCook Community Hospital. The driver’s condition remains unknown. The Weather Craft truck driver declined medical treatment despite sustaining a head injury.

Passersby assisted by slowing down traffic to protect the accident scene and the injured driver.

The RWCS is continuing its investigation into the incident.
