MCC women sweep a home pair from visiting Lamar
McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Community College softball team swept a pair of games Monday at home against Lamar Community College. MCC won by the scores of 14-6 and 7-2.
The Lady Indians got home runs in Game 1 from sophomores Andie Suhai (Medicine Hat, Alberta) and Brylee Dean (Gering) and a win in the pitching circle from sophomore Ella Covill-Marter (Queensland, Australia).
“We had a balanced attack at the plate scoring in almost every inning in the first game,” said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. “We took a little bit to get going at the plate in Game 2.”
In Game 2, freshman Rocio Mascorro struck a solo home run with two outs in the fourth inning to break up a scoreless game and MCC added three runs in the fifth and sixth inning to back the pitching of freshman Sadie Kahl (Calgary, Alberta).
“Great pitching performances again by Ella and Sadie,” said Mendenhall. “Rocio got us going with a solo shot in the fourth. These were two good team wins for us today.”
Lamar falls to 5-13 in Region IX and 12-18 overall.
MCC improves to 27-7 overall, and 9-5 in the region as well as going to 14-4 at home.
The four-game series concludes today with a doubleheader to start at 11 a.m. at the Jaycees Sports Complex.
The Lady Indians will continue the homestand Wednesday with two games against Central Community College. Wednesday’s doubleheader starts at 2 p.m.
This will be the start of the eight-game Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference schedule.
The Raiders are 14-11 on the season and 0-2 in the NCCAC, having lost two games to Southeast Community College.
GAME 1 – McCook CC 14, Lamar 6: MCC took a 2-0 edge in the first on a leadoff single by freshman Laila Gutierrez (Seminole, Texas), a walk and a two-run single by freshman Lexi Knapp (Berthoud, Colo.). A pair of leadoff walks in the second set the table for freshman Anna Elliott (Calgary, Alberta) who doubled home two runs to put her team up 4-0.
Sophomore Andie Suhai (Medicine Hat, Alberta) homered to lead off the third and the Lady Indians added another run with two outs on an RBI-single from Ella Covill-Marter to give MCC a 6-0 lead.
The Runnin’ Lopes got a two-out grand slam in the fifth to extend the game but MCC walked it off in the sixth on a walk with singles by freshman Ayana Goodwin (Broomfield, Colo.), Gutierrez and a walk-off single by Suhai.
Covill-Marter picked up the win in the circle, hurling five innings, and allowing four earned runs on three hits, three walks and she struck out three.
Kahl struck out all three of the batters she faced in the sixth inning.
