LINCOLN, Neb. — McCook’s wisdom clearly does not begin or end with sniffing a beautiful new tennis ball just popped free from its Pringles-like carrier can.

The Bison have also proven to be quite wise in classrooms, and Nebraska Coaches Association leaders recognized this fact recently.

McCook boys tennis became one of four across Class B to earn Academic Excellence Awards from NCA.

Teams must compile a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average during fall 2023 to qualify.

McCook seniors Jonny Frank. Lincoln Michaelis, Nathaniel Miller, Kaiden Porter, Caleb Shaw and junior Reid Loop received the top academic honor recently.

“A great honor. Shows the well roundness of our players and their commitment to academics,” Bison tennis coach Matt Wiemers said.

McCook excelled academically while placing No. 4 at the Class B state tournament in October.

No other Class B academic recipient placed higher than 10th. Beatrice, Elkhorn and Lincoln Christian joined the Bison as award winners.

The Class A boys academic excellence team recipients were Kearney, Elkhorn South, Lincoln Pius X, Norfolk and Columbus/Columbus Scotus.
