Bison boys visit 19-4 Haymakers to cap regular season

Thursday, February 15, 2024

COZAD, Neb. — McCook High’s boys will try to cool down the 19-4 Cozad Haymakers when they play their regular-season finale tonight at Cozad High School.

The Bison (8-12) need some momentum since they haven’t enjoyed a victory since that last-second Josiah Wilkinson shot beat North Platte on Jan. 19.

McCook celebrated its first win over those Bulldogs in 11-plus years only to slip into 18th place among Class B teams as far as post-season playoff points.

The top 16 will play for state tournament spots when district finals time arrives in less than two weeks.

Cozad could just use a challenge since the current five-game win streak has not featured a closer game than 50-37 over Minden on Feb. 2.

The Haymakers have hammered Holdrege, 83-32; and Sandhills Valley 72-32 during this unbeaten surge.

Yet Cozad’s best wins are over Gothenburg, Cambridge and Ainsworth. The ’Makers are only 13th in C-1 power points.

Junior 6’3” guard Noah Shoemaker leads Cozad at 13.7 points per game while 6’1” sophomore Oliver Davis hits field goals at 61 points and a 10.8 average. Watch for results Friday.
