McCOOK, Neb. — Students got a chance to go head-to-head with their teachers at Tuesday night’s “Students vs. Staff Basketball Game” sponsored by the McCook High School Student Council.

The event, aimed at raising funds for a worthy cause, proved to be an enjoyable evening for all attendees. With tickets priced at $1 for students and $2 for general admission, spectators had the opportunity to contribute to their favorite team’s score by donating a dollar per point. Students and their supporters sported red attire, while staff members and their fans donned green.

The primary objective of this holiday fundraiser was to gather donations for the Southwest Nebraska Family Resource Center, which assists local families in need. The Student Council had high hopes of making a meaningful impact on the lives of community members during this season of giving.

Michelle Dickes, wife of High School Principal Craig Dickes, expressed her delight in seeing teachers from various buildings coming together for such a worthwhile cause. She commended their efforts in raising substantial funds and proposed the idea of organizing a staff vs. student volleyball game in the future. As for Craig’s preparation for the game, he unearthed his old ankle brace in anticipation.

Tiffany, wife of Chris Corbett, a substitute teacher and basketball player in the game, revealed that Chris didn’t have much practice leading up to the event unless you count watching countless high school basketball games as practice.

She confessed her allegiance to Team Green but thoroughly enjoyed watching the students give the staff a tough challenge. Tiffany also highlighted the impressive skills exhibited by the staff players. She expressed her hope to see this game become an ongoing tradition, supporting different foundations within the community.

Josh Jones, a special education teacher, was taken aback by the game’s outcome, admitting, “I thought the kids winning was a sure thing, boy was I wrong.”

In total, approximately $1,500 was raised for the Southwest Neb. Family Resource Center. The final score resulted in a victory for the staff, with a score of 568 to 406.
