Raiders roar into next skirmish with mighty May-Hay girls
McCOOK, Neb. — A closing 26-11 surge on Tuesday showed what these Medicine Valley Raiders can show even when “feeling a little winded.”
The M.V. girls broke free from Arapahoe, 50-33, and now really get their lungs ready for an ultimate Cattle Trail semifinal challenge Friday night:
Undefeated neighbor Maywood-Hayes Center.
“They don’t have the height, but they still ahve the aggressiveness,” Med Valley coach Derek Bantam said about the MayHay girls who await. “We get them into the fourth close and I like our chances.”
Especially when senior Stella Heapy takes charge like she did on Tuesday with 20 game-high points.
The Raiders were only leading Arapahoe, 24-22, until Heapy and junior Remmi Stout fueled Med Valley’s first win this season (1-2).
Stout totaled 13 points besides cleaning the class on both ends.
“Remmi was kind of frustrated early, but she got it going and got some huge rebounds,” Bantam confirmed. “They (Arapahoe) scored the first five of the second half. I looked at the clock and said ‘hey, we have to get back on defense.’ We did, got it back up to 10 (point lead) and took it from there.”
Bantam praised all his starters and reserves like Kamree Elsten. The Raiders had already been tested in tough games vs. Southwest and Paxton last weekend.
Meanwhile, Maywood-Hayes Center (3-0) began defense of its latest Cattle Trail Tournament title as Karissa Stengel’s 15 points powered the 43-27 Tuesday victory over Hitchcock County.
Kesli Cox added six points following her 30-point explosion vs. Southwest on Saturday.
Katie Jarecke reached double figures for the Falcons (0-2).
