McCOOK, Neb. — One person was confirmed dead and another seriously injured in a plane crash near the McCook airport Monday.

The plane, a Piper Malibu Mirage, crashed into a residential area an eighth of a mile southwest of Ben Nelson Regional Airport adjacent to the main highway shortly before noon. One occupant was declared dead at the scene and another was transported to Community Hospital with serious injuries and then transferred to a larger facility.

One home was damaged in the crash and the occupants were unable to stay in the home because of the spilled jet fuel and other hazards.

Records show the plane flew from Louisiana to McCook on Friday. Two hunting dogs reportedly survived the crash and are being cared for in McCook.

Names have not been released pending notification of relatives.

McCook Police, Fire Department, Nebraska State Patrol and American Red Cross volunteers responded to the scene.

The National Safety Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation.
