Welcome to McCook

Bruce Crosby/McCook Gazette

New “Welcome to McCook” signs are in place for McCook’s main entrances, and a variety of trees stretch along the sidewalk toward Walmart, thanks to the Ten Free Trees program offered by the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Supplied by the Common Scents Nursery and planted by city crews, they include two each of bur oak, hackberry and chinkapin oak, and one each of skyline honeylocust, acer fall fiesta maple, sterling linden and catalpa. The program is designed to help counteract a steady decline in community forests because of challenges such as extreme weather, insects, disease and lack of diversity, most recently the emerald ash borer.

  • They look great and a nice addition of the newly planted trees.

  • Did they ever get the "Burns" sign removed from in front of the old burns lab building?

It makes it look like you are entering the town of Burns.

  • Burns is a privately owned property. It's up to the them not the City.

  • Burns doesn't own it. Mike Devany owns it.

No, I didn't say it was the property of the city of McCook, What I asked was if anyone had spoken to the owner if they would consider taking down the sign as burns shut down their plant here and moved the jobs to somewhere else. Given the fact that they are not an employer, nor own any property in this town. You would think that someone would address the fact that the Business sign of a defunct company is larger than the welcome to mccook sign.

  • Lots of miscommunication here but no issues. Yes, it's privately owned by Mr. Deveny and yes he is aware. It's his decision what to do with it. However, you're certainly welcome to contact him to voice your concerns.
