Roughriders start fast at jamboree, Cambridge golf quad
CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — The Southwest Roughriders delivered a high golf team place and volleyball jamboree victory to start their fall sports season Thursday.
Southwest returns plenty of height and talent from last year’s historic district champion volleyball team.
The Class C-2 state tournament team (27-7 last fall) dropped their first two sets to Hi-Line 25-11 and 25-20.
Yet coach Kim Barnett’s girls never faced match point as they for 25-12, 25-14 and 25-3 wins.
The Roughriders tip off their season at South Platte in their varsity season opener on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the official first varsity girls golf meet in 2023 was another Southwest success.
Though just nine holes, the Roughriders captured five top 10 individual places and claimed second overall behind champ North Platte St. Patrick’s.
Elizabeth Townsend earned third with a round of 50 behind only Cambridge’s Emma Rasmussen (53) and Stephanie Budke from St. Pat’s (52).
Ella Cure followed in fourth place with 64, Abigail Sedlacek eighth (72), Riley Cure ninth (72) and Maddie Tryon 10th (75).
Kennedy Bailey gave Dundy County-Stratton a solid representation, placing sixth on this warm afternoon by firing her round of 66.
