Civics, construction among school board topics
McCOOK, Neb. - McCook Committee on American Civics met before the school board meeting and discussed the upcoming year's new policies and reviewed the content provided by the teachers to ensure that no unapproved curriculum is being taught as a primary form of government. Superintendent Grant Norgaard outlined the school's duty in helping students become responsible, patriotic and civil citizens.
Norgaard talked about the importance of students learning the Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and the US documents such as the Declaration of Independence. Students begin as soon as they reach kindergarten and continue to learn about US government and law, and American History and Civics.
After the Committee on American Civics, McCook Public School Business Manager Jeff Gross updated the School board on the projects that the school had going this summer and the Summer School Food Services totals for the summer. CTE construction had completed the track press box, track and football sheds with new siding, roofs, and gutters. The new concession stand/restroom storage facility is in progress with weather delays slowing that project down.
Tillotson Roofing has completed the roof at Central Elementary, and Eco Guard roofing is about 66 percent done with the Senior High Gym.
Overseeding and aeration are done as well as paint crews and new sidewalks and curbs have finished up at Weiland field. The remodeling of the Business/Superintendent office is progressing and the “maintenance crew has done an outstanding job” said Gross.
The McCook Summer School program finished the summer with 11,028 meals served, with 50% of the students believed to be participating in the program. Norgaard praised Sherri Wallace for all her hard work and dedication in leading the summer school program. Norgaard also thanked all the paras and summer staff. The board also recognized Sheila Oneil for having the Central Elementary cleaning and maintenance ahead of schedule.
