McCOOK, Neb. - McCook’s fastest growing sport is showing no signs of slowing down. The area’s pickleball community has been thriving, with enthusiasts coming together to enjoy the sport and make a positive impact on the wellness and engagement in their community. Led by dedicated players like Christy Stevens, the group is staying active with events and upgrades to their facilities.

About a month ago, the McCook pickleball group held a tournament to raise funds for Stella McConnell, a six-year-old brain cancer fighter from the community. The event was a resounding success, as it managed to generate over $2,000 in donations, says Stevens. The tournament attracted participants not only from McCook but also from neighboring towns like Oberlin and North Platte. Support within the community was evident as teams joined forces to contribute to the cause.

One of the group's upcoming goals is to install lights on the pickleball courts in order to allow players to continue enjoying the sport during evening hours, providing greater accessibility and flexibility for players of all ages. Additionally, the group is actively seeking opportunities to enhance the pickleball court facilities. While details about specific updates are yet to be disclosed, Stevens and the group are enthusiastic about the potential improvements that will further enhance the playing experience for both regulars and newcomers.

Plans are also underway to encourage youth groups and other organizations to utilize the pickleball courts, with experienced McCook pickleball members ready and willing to share their skills. The McCook E-Free church has plans to involve their youth in teaching them pickleball on an upcoming Wednesday night, and the pickleball group is optimistic about the potential for local youth to embrace the rapidly growing sport.

For those interested in learning the sport, the McCook pickleball community extends an open invitation, says Stevens:

“Anyone who wants to learn how to play is welcome to come anytime, and we are willing to teach them.”

Regular sessions are held at the McCook YMCA every weekday morning from 8:30 a.m. to around 11:00 a.m. Players of all skill levels are welcome to attend these sessions, where experienced players will be available to provide guidance.

Additionally, Russell Park has become a popular gathering spot for pickleball enthusiasts. Sunday afternoons around 2 p.m. and evenings around 6 p.m. will usually find players convening at the park for friendly matches, unless adverse conditions revent it. The recently renovated courts represent the only available outdoor pickleball venue in the area.

Whether in improving the facilities available in the area or in teaching others to pick up the sport and help it grow, the McCook pickleball community is more active than ever. They look forward to welcoming new members and promoting the sport’s growth even further.
