McCOOK, Neb. — The American Red Cross responded to aid a family forced from a home by a fire Saturday evening.

The homeowner called 911 at 8:12 p.m. and was able to evacuate the home, 810 E. Sixth, before firefighters arrived.

According to a release from the McCook Fire Department, the first firefighters on the scene reported smoke coming from the structure's eves. The fire originated in a bathroom wall, and despite the homeowner's attempts to extinguish it, quickly spread into the attic where it caused substantial damage before being extinguished by firefighters, who then spent time removing insulation and ceilings in the bathroom and kitchen areas of the home.

The fire damage was contained to the interior wall and attic space, however, there was considerable smoke and water damage throughout the structure. Initial estimates on damage were set at $100,000.

The City of McCook Fire Department responded with one ladder truck, one engine, one ambulance and one command vehicle. Eleven fire personnel spent nearly two hours on the scene.

The family will be displaced for an extended period and the Red Cross responded to aid the family.

There were no injuries reported.
