Frolics in Farming

Two-crop hogwash

Thursday, September 15, 2022

INDIANOLA, Neb. - Drama! Drama! Drama! OMG! I just read an article that the USDA is wanting farmers to plant two crops in a season on the same ground, thereby helping to relieve food shortages. If that isn’t a bunch of hogwash, they’ve got a lot of people fooled.

Besides the fact that it would potentially bring crop prices down, which must be the goal, it will also rape the soil. Farmer Tom is not a proponent of continuous farming, at least not in our area, and I’ve never actually seen it work around here. Granted, one might get a decent crop on continuous dry land one out of five years but that’s only if we have rain.

My assessment is that farmers who do that are mostly trying to work the crop insurance angle and I don’t think that is very lucrative, but that’s just me. I’ve seen many a wannabe farmer go out of business trying to plant fence line to fence line.

I also read the government was paying some farmers to destroy their crops, contradicting the double crop idea. Sounds like these bureaucrats really don’t know what they want. I’m afraid this administration is all kinds of messed up. They are not only destroying our energy independence by not using our own fossil fuels, but they are also increasing inflation and making everyday folks spend more to live. They simply can’t keep their heads above water when it comes to common sense.

They even have commercials, probably using taxpayer money, saying how the new inflation bill is going to save us money. What a bunch of liars! At $4 trillion (with a “T”) that this dementia hammerhead has already spent in 18 months, can we withstand two more years of this? Yet there are people who “ignorantly” still think he’s a compassionate guy!

California already can’t keep up the electric power grid just to run their home air conditioning. How does anyone with a brain think our country can go to all-electric vehicles? Maybe someday...but certainly not yet.

This administration reminds me of a toddler with big ideas but not the understanding of how to make it truly work!

Have a good one!

They already do some double cropping in the area of expanded coverage. Planting deadlines are being extended to allow producers to qualify for federal crop insurance when planting beyond the current deadline. It may be enough encouragement to risk a second crop. There is nothing nefarious about it.

Additionally, could you site your source next week on the USDA paying producers to destroy crops and which crops?

  • The only second crop combination that is viable in our area is short season soybeans following wheat (under irrigation). We just do not have a long enough growing season to be able to plant and harvest two crops in a year. As a whole, I would say that the farmers are pushing the ground and water as hard as they dare. We must remember that farmers are businesspersons and will make the decisions that are the most profitable. When you get into the marginal business decisions such as second crops, the farmer is taking a much larger risk that could potentially affect him/her for years.

  • There are parts of the country where double and occasionally triple crops in a twelve month period have been grown for decades. Nebraska is not the end all or be all of agriculture.

California squeaked by with no major power outages. That is due in large part to we Californians working together for the common good. One of the largest outages was caaused by a human misreading a warning memo and was not necessary. We Californians remember the outages about 20 years ago were found to have been caused by a manipulation of the regional energy grid by the greedy Republicans affiliated with Enron....some of those greedy, Texas republicans ended up in prison. And California's power grid has consistently performed better than the one in Texas.

Fuel shortages....trump's buddy putin started an unjustified war that has disrupted the world's fuel supply. The entire planet is experiencing fuel shortages and inflation due to Putin's actions, thanks trump (just what did you and your buddy discuss in your private meeting where only interpreters were allowed? Imagine if any other President had pulled a stunt like that!), and the grossly overpaid, greedy corporate executives.

While Biden is far from my favorite politician he has yet to encourage his followers to mount a terrorist attack on our Nation's Capitol based on a baseless lie. (Almost every instance of voter fraud proven in the 2020 election was committed by republicans.)

Even with quite a lukewarm, personal opinion of Biden it is reality he has handled the absolute mess left to him by his predecessor with concern for people and for the future.

But if one wishes to believe the big lies of today's far right approaching fascist politicians that is their right. But the lies are shameful.

Could you provide a source stating taxpayer money is being used to pay for the ads you reference?

Promotion of inaccurate information is a hallmark of fascist movements
