Cowboy vs Cowboy Wannabe

Thursday, September 1, 2022

INDIANOLA, Neb. — I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “Cowboy vs Cowboy Wannabe.”

In my mind, a true cowboy can ride just about any horse. Rodeo Queen contestants and horsemanship riders can usually ride their own or a leased horse, but not necessarily another contestant’s horse, so I’ve always thought the trading of horses is a way to tell which person is a good rider.

Then there are Farmers and Farmer Wannabes. Farmer Tom is very passionate about his farming practices. Not only is he trying to make a buck, but he’s also wanting to leave the ground as good or better than when he started.

I’ve never considered myself a cowboy or a farmer. I’d prefer to ride a horse that I’m familiar with and I’ve never been particularly brave when it comes to broncs. Even though I help Tom with some tractor work, I certainly don’t enjoy it.

The cattle are a different story … I love them!  There again, a commercial herd is way different than a show herd so it’s very difficult for the two to compete against each other in a judging contest. Even though our kids may have won a class here or there, our goal was to teach them how to raise, feed, groom, and make money while doing it.

In the animal world there are males and females (except maybe amoeba). There are also the advantages of spaying and neutering said animals, with not much noticeable confusion as to what they are. I think most grade school kids could define one or the other by their chromosomes. Not so the new “woke” Supreme Court Justice who must not be the sharpest “tool” in the shed. She claimed she wasn’t a scientist, so could not define what a female is. Makes this grandma really worried about the future for our country. One can only hope that our kids are learning true facts before they ever go to school.

Have a good one!
