McCOOK, Neb. — Calling on Mom for help at the new job recently only shows how much Trevor Hoins has grown in his favorite sport.

“I know she was happy to come help with our camp,” McCook High’s new volleyball coach said about long-time Superior High volleyball coach Carla Hoins. “I’ve always loved the game...but I never thought I would want to coach.”

Trevor has already gained some co-head coaching experience alongside Lincoln Southwest legend Mary Schropfer, who earned more than 480 career wins along with multiple Nebraska state titles.

They coached together at Meridian High School before Trevor and wife Marisa moved to McCook.

Bam! How’s that for a resume starter?

Yet Trevor handled many other duties while student managing on Mom’s Superior teams since his earliest school days.

“I didn’t miss a volleyball match for like 10 or 12 years,” he revealed before Thursday’s McCook team practice.

In other words, Trevor played all the traditional sports from football to summer baseball as a Superior Wildcat.

He played the Community Hospital 2022 Pro-Am this summer at Heritage Hills with McCook High former state golfers Brady Esch, Trevor Oberg and Payton Craw.

But there’s only one sport Trevor has truly lived.

Name a Nebraska Cornhusker great and the math teacher adds up names like Jordan Larson or Cambridge’s Christina Houghtelling.

“Jordan was probably my favorite,” Trevor says about the national champion and U.S. Olympic gold medalist. “Jordan was always two or three steps ahead of the rest.”

No Jordan references revolve around basketball and America’s greatest program (North Carolina Tar Heels, obviously).

How about Nebraska Cornhusker football?

Eeehh.

“I’ll go to a game, but I’ll just as likely find a way not to go,” he admitted.

So there’s no lack of focus as Trevor takes over McCook Bison volleyball.

The Nebraska-Oklahoma game on Saturday, Sept. 17 will mean nothing compared to McCook’s annual Bison Volleyball Invitational.

He’s learned about the Bison players during summer camps and activities.

On Thursday, fans were blowing and McCook High’s gym was booming with volleyball practicing.

“I was impressed with the off-season buy-in from the kids and the effort — they do really want to get better and go beyond expectations,” he said. “It’s all about building a culture within your program, and these seniors are helping us do that.”

Coaching great fundaments are a big part of what Trevor has learned through all his volleyball years. Serving, passing and great team defense are huge factors in volleyball wins.

However, learning to win is where Trevor regains some focus on football — specifically McCook Bison football.

“We want to be a competitive every year, like I’ve always known about the football here,” he explained. “When I was at Superior, we obviously didn’t play McCook but I did follow all the sports. And McCook was always a team mentioned when talking about the best in Class B.”

The Bison team can be annual Pre-Season Jamboree on Monday, Aug. 22 at McCook High against Hitchcock County and Dundy-County Stratton.

Just three nights later, the Lexington Minutemaids visit MHS and Hoins’ historic first season will be underway.

He’ll also continue teaching sixth-grade math for the McCook Schools while Marisa is a special education teacher at Central Elementary.

Marisa is a McCook native.

“She helps a lot behind the scenes,” Trevor concluded. “We’re happy to be part of what has been a very supportive community.”
