INDIANOLA, Neb. — The Indianola Historical Society is honoring our nation’s service people and thanking donors to the project at a sign dedication ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday at Main and U.S. Highway 6-34 in Indianola.

Pastor Kyle Dellevoet of McCook Christian Church, also a veteran, will be the guest speaker at the event, followed by the Old Settlers Picnic Parade, in its 120th year, one block north at 10 a.m.

The double-sided, 10- by 5-foot sign, anchored in concrete, features LED solar lighting, visible from almost two blocks away.

“As we were pouring concrete for placement, several semi trucks honked their horns as they passed by,” said Paul Schaffert of the historical society. “Every place we go in town, people comment on how appropriate this memorial is for the trying times we are in our country.”

The lot also features a national historical site marker for the World War II German prisoner of war camp just on the north edge of Indianola.

The camp is one of the few that still has foundations in place as well as a water tower, visible from the highway north of Indianola, Schaffert said.

“Come see ‘The Best Little City Out West.’ God Bless America Let’s preserve Freedom,” he said.
