New decorating store mixes it up with new, vintage pieces
McCOOK, Neb. — A new store of unique home decor, furniture and antique items has opened at 1310 north U.S. Highway 83.
“The Collected Home,” owned and operated by Maureen Wood of McCook, has new and vintage decorating items, such as leather and canvas shoulder bags, jewelry, antique McCoy and Jadeite collections and quirky decorating objects, like a distressed white chandelier with candles inside glass.
“I’ve been collecting for years, I love the hunt,” Wood said of the furniture and other antiques she’s found at area auctions and those in Denver, Colo. Many of the furniture pieces Wood has restored or re-painted could be used as a focal point in a room, such as the restored Hoosier cabinet or a hand-carved oak chest made into a dry bar, or something to brighten up a dull corner, like her mirrored vanity painted sky blue with birds and twining flowering branches.
There are plenty of new items, too, like an assortment of birdhouses, some that look like vintage tea kettles, soaps, lotions, silk flowers and dozens of decorating accessories, like pictures, pillows and tabletop objects. In decorating, don’t be afraid to mix and match, Wood said, by creating vignettes of new and vintage items.
Wood used to be one of the three owners of “The Painted Ladies,” a decorating store on Norris Avenue that closed a few years ago. After retiring a year and half ago as the human resource manager at a local manufacturing plant, she found herself itching to do something. Wood said she re-decorated her home and “painted everything.”
“I found myself watching too much TV and thinking, now what?” she said.
Opening a retail store was the answer. She first opened “The Farm Cottage” on West Third, but decided the location wasn’t ideal. At the new location on U.S. Highway 83, the location is easier to access and she has more room.
That will come in handy for additional antique and restored furniture stored in two barns and one storage unit, that she plans to put in the store.
Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday.
If you don’t find what you’re looking for on your first visit, come back the following week: new items will be displayed weekly, Wood said.
