Kearney Bearcats, Stars stop McCook's unbeaten dual run

Wednesday, April 27, 2022

KEARNEY, Neb. — Kearney and Kearney Catholic both stepped up to stop McCook's varsity tennis dual win streak at nine Tuesday afternoon.

The Bison were playing without varsity regulars Carley Peters and Carsyn Craig, who both stayed home due to illness.

"Laci Stewart and Rowen Wiemers did a really good job of stepping for us, some really good battles there," coach Matt Wiemers said.

Yet the Keraney teams prevailed despite McCook's Abbie Johnson and Izzy Clause avenging an earlier defeat against Kearney's No. 1 doubles team, 8-3, on Tuesday.

Junior Jaci Meyers won 8-6 over Kearney and nearly rallied against Kearney Catholic after falling behind 6-3. However, the No. 3 Star singles player took a 9-8 overtime thriller.

"Kearney Catholic had all six players back from last year, and Kearney always plays us tough here," coach Wiemers said.

More details will appear in Thursday's Gazette.

Top six singles and three doubles matches count on varsity dual scores.
