Kathy Wilmot announces run for Board of Regents
BEAVER CITY, Neb. — Kathy Wilmot of Beaver City has announced her candidacy for District 7 Board of Regents. District 7 is comprised of the western 45 counties of Nebraska, reaching from the Colorado/Wyoming line to the eastern edges of Holt and Harlan counties.
Wilmot signed paperwork to enter the District 7 race at the Secretary of State’s office on Monday.
“The taxpayers of western Nebraska are hard-working people. They want their children to have access to an affordable, academic education that provides them the knowledge necessary to successfully deal with the professions and changes they will encounter in life,” Wilmot says. “Parents are not interested in paying expensive tuitions for indoctrination; they want quality education.”
Managing the budget and ensuring the University system has excellent, quality leaders at the helm is crucial, according to Wilmot. “My past experience in achieving national accreditation in the prison system and budget oversite and policy setting while on the State Board of Education will provide excellent experience on the Board of Regents.”
Wilmot, a 6th generation Nebraskan, and her husband, Wes, reside near Beaver City. Wilmot received her graduate degree from the University of Nebraska, as has her sons and several grandchildren. Her experience includes teaching in Nebraska’s public school system, serving as an Equal Opportunity Commission investigator, Training Officer and Accreditation Manager for the Kansas Department of Corrections where she successfully assisted the Norton Correctional Facility in achieving national certification with the American Correctional Association.
Wilmot has a long history of public service, including as a member on the Nebraska State Board of Education, in which she represented District 7 for 8 years. While serving, she was a consistent advocate for local district control, phonics instruction to enhance reading skills, academic standards to be set by local districts, and the responsible use of taxpayer dollars. Wilmot also worked to defeat a comprehensive sex education grant and curriculum that called for the distribution of condoms in classrooms and explicit drawings of a sexual nature in textbooks as early as the fourth grade.
Wilmot serves as State President of Nebraska Eagle Forum and as an at-large director on the Eagle Forum Board of Directors.
