Filing deadline is fast approaching

McCOOK, Neb. – It’s decision time for incumbents who wish to retain their seats for elected positions as the deadline for filing for re-election is February 15. Incumbents must file on the Feb. 15 deadline, even if they are seeking a different elected office.

New candidates have until March 1 to throw their hat into the ring.

Red Willow County office-holders file on a partisan basis, and so far, everyone that has filed is registered as Republican. Unless there are challengers from other political parties, the races will be decided in the primary election on May 10. The offices that are up for election include:

County Clerk currently held by Tami Teel who is not running for re-election; Penny Cooper has filed

Clerk of the District Court-Lori O’Dea who has filed for re-election

County Assessor-Kristi Korell, filed

County Treasurer-Crystal Dack, filed

County Sheriff-Alan Kotschwar has not filed; Dalton Downing and William Watts have both filed.

County Attorney-Paul Wood, filed

County Surveyor-no elected incumbent; Doug Terry has filed.

District 1 Commissioner-Earl McNutt, filed; Ted Gans has also filed

District 3 Commissioner-Cayla Richards, filed; Charles Fritsche has also filed.

School board and city council positions are non-partisan, so the races will only be on the primary ballot if the number of candidates are double the number of vacancies plus one.

McCook School District Board members’ seats for Loretta Hauxwell, Mike Langan, and Dennis Berry are up for re-election. Mike Langan has filed.

McCook City Council members’ seats for Mike Gonzales, Gene Weedin, and Jared Muelenkamp will be up. Gonzales and Weedin have filed as of press time.

State Legislature positions are also non-partisan. For District 38, (which includes Furnas and Red Willow counties) Dave Murman is the incumbent, and he has filed for re-election. Tyler Cappel of Arapahoe has also filed.

District 44 senator (includes Hitchcock, Hayes, Chase, and Dundy counties) is Dan Hughes, who is not eligible to run again due to term limits. Edward Dunn of Grant has filed.

Deadlines/Dates:

Feb. 15 - incumbents must file

Mar. 1 - new candidates must file

May 10 - primary election

Nov. 8 - general election.
