Freshmen leading Buffaloes, Wolves to victory

STAPLETON, Neb. —Freshman Aubrey Broz’s 16 points helped Maywood Hayes-Center reach 6-0 as the Wolves downed Sandhills Valley, 46-35, Tuesday night.

The Wolves overcame a cold shooting performance (14 for 60) thanks to Broz hitting 50 percent of her field goals (five for 10).

Once again, they also finished strong with a 13-6 fourth quarter breaking open an otherwise close contest.

Junior Olivia Hansen contributed nine points, senior Stevie Handsaker seven while three Wolves each added four: juniors Kiley Hejtmanek, Alexis Wood and freshman Kesli Cox.

Wood pulled down 11 rebounds. Hansen and Hejtmanek each snabbed five.

Sandhills Valley remained winless at 0-4.

Rawlins 59,

DC-S 23

ATWOOD, Kan. — The Rawlins County (Kan.) girls are 4-1 following their 59-23 victory over Dundy County-Stratton Tuesday night.

Freshman Reece Smith scored 15 points on seven for 11 shooting (64 percent).

Junior Mariyah Nichols netted 12 points and junior Michaela Rippe made three of four tries for eight points.

Seniors Rylee Unruh, Sadie Sramek and Emmersyn Highley added five points apiece.

Higley hit the Buffs’ one three-pointer.

Rippe’s seven led the rebounding for host Rawlins.

Nichols and sophomore Abby Micek each collected six.

No individual stats were obtained for DC-S, which slipped to 0-5 this season.

Decatur Comm. 48,

Hill City 25

HILL CITY, Kan. — The Decatur Community Red Devils took a 20-3 lead and blew through Hill City Tuesday evening.

Junior Gabbie Vontz’s 15 points, Breyana Gehring scoring 14 and senior Brynna Addleman 13 for the Red Devils (2-3 record).

Addleman totaled 12 rebounds during the dominant effort, eight offensively.

Alma 50,

Southwest 39

ALMA, Neb. — An early Southwest lead didn’t quite hold up against the 5-1 Alma Cardinals Tuesday night.

Alma led 31-25 by halftime and then smothered the comeback hopes with a 12-3 third period.

Southwest slipped to 3-3 on the season.

Junior Caylin Barnett’s 13 points paced the Roughriders.

Another two SW girls added six points each in Asia Gallegos and Atleigh Nelms. These quick, promising freshmen are playing larger roles for the Roughriders.

Junior Bailey Truksa also scored six points.

Barnett totaled 12 rebounds for another double-double.
