Roughriders on three-game win streak

ALMA, Neb. — Southwest’s boys have turned an 0-3 start into 3-3 with a 53-30 victory over Alma Tuesday evening.

Junior Hunter Cunningham has become a consistent top scorer, putting 16 points through the nets while classmate Cole Barnett hit his varsity-best 13.

Barnett made five of nine shots including the one ’Rider three-pointer.

Sophomore Nathan Rippe netted eight points to go with another eight combined from juniors Kaiden Ruggles (four) and Zack Ryan (four).

It was more than enough for Southwest’s third straight win as junior Kaiden Ruggles blocked three Cardinal shots besides seven rebounds.

Coach Christian Arterburn’s boys led from start to a strong 14-4 finish in the fourth quarter.

Alma now owns a 1-5 record this season.

The Roughriders (3-3) dropped their first three but took two games at last weekend’s Cattle Trail Tournament for fifth place overall.

They’ll visit Arapahoe Friday evening in pursuit of a fourth consecutive win.

ATWOOD, Kan. — The Dundy County-Stratton Tigers suffered no letdowns Tuesday after winning another Cattle Trail Tournament on Saturday.

They’ve won five straight since an opening defeat to Yuma, Colo.

No individual stats were obtained from Tuesday. The Rawlins Buffaloes are now 2-3.

STAPLETON, Neb. — The Sandhills Valley Mavericks needed a 25-point fourth quarter to stay unbeaten (4-0) Tuesday evening.

M-HC (2-4) built a 39-35 lead through three periods but suffered its third loss to teams (Sandhills Valley, DC-S, Medicine Valley) who are 13-2 combined so far this season.

Senior Weston Morrow’s 16 points led the Wolves while a sophomore combo of Jeremiah Ingison (14) and Haydn Farr (12) combined for 26 points.

Both Ingison and Farr also powered to 13 rebounds apiece.

Junior Kyler Cox put another nine points through the nets.
